In-Class Activities

Small group discussion (based on videos and assigned readings):

  • How would you define "big data?"
  • Through what systems do you personally contribute information that adds to big data?  (Consider social media, your web activities, etc.)
  • What are some examples of sources of data in healthcare?
  • What are the benefits of using "big data?"  How is it being used in healthcare?
  • What are some of the ethical issues related to collecting and using "big data" that were discussed in the readings and videos?

Small group activity:

  • Read the following article:
  • Discuss and answer the following questions regarding the article:
    • What was the intervention to improve patient care?
    • What data were the researchers using?
    • Where did the data come from?
    • Did the authors address specific data privacy issues?  Were patients informed about the use of their data for this specific project? If so, how?
    • What might be some ethical concerns?
    • What questions do you have for the article's authors about how they conducted the study?
