EDU 340: Tips and Tricks

Advanced Teaching Strategies

Finding school information

  • Elementary school websites are written for parents--not researchers
    • You may need to contact the school's secretary for school-specific information that isn't on the district or state websites
  • Local newspapers are great sources for information about schools
    • Find the newspapers that serve that town/region
    • Search newspaper's website for articles on the school

Finding community information

  • Demographic data is always slightly old--it takes a while to collect and compile the data
  • County websites will have demographic data
  • Local newspapers are good for other types of information about the community
  • Cities/towns also have websites--and may provide some demographic data
