Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). Went into effect in 2003. Designed to protect patient privacy by setting federal standards for storage and access to patent records. The Administration Simplification Compliance Act (ASCA) added the provision that all transactions must be submitted electronically. The Affordable Care Act of 2010 added provisions for a standard and operating rules for electronic funds transfer (EFT) and electronic remittance advice (RA) and claims attachments.
